The first specimen was lot 20402 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1699-K. Bordeaux Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). NGC MS-61. This écu aux palmes is struck over an écu à la meche longue (1646-54) of the Paris mint. The écu aux palmes is very common but the later dates, including this one, are very hard to find. Although the undertype is visible on both sides, Louis XIV's portrait is clear and much luster is present." The specimen shown is an écu aux palmes ("écu with palms") struck in Tours during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux insignes. Droulers[1] prices this date as common, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than an écu à la mèche longue.
Recorded mintage: 4,306 fn + unknown rf[1].
Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM.
