from the Stacks Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 22358
France SB818-22358r.jpg

This specimen was lot 22358 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1793-R. Orleans Mint. NGC AU-55. A highly original example from this scarcer mint, with a lovely veil of tone over the surfaces and strong underlying luster. A touch of central softness likely prevented the AU-58 grade." This specimen is a "constitutional écu" struck at the Orleans mint, one of a type struck there 1792-93, prior to the trial and execution of the king. Its divisions were the ½, 1/4 and 1/8 écu, struck in billon. The écu was worth $1.10 in the USA before the Civil War. The 1792-A and 1793-A are the most available dates of this scarce type, the other mints are mostly rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, 11 deniers (.917 fine), 8.3 pieces to the mark (29.488 g), face value 6 livres, 39 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dav-1335; KM-615.12; Gad-55.
