Jean Elsen sale 156, lot 1074

This specimen was lot 1074 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €3,600 (about US$4,619 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIEGE, Principauté, Georges d'Autriche (1544-1557), AR daler à l'écu, s.d. (1552), Liège. Au titre de Charles Quint. D/ Ecu écartelé de l'évêque. R/ Aigle impériale éployée et couronnée. Extrêmement rare. Très Beau. Provient de Jean Elsen, mai 1994. (principality of Liège, George of Austria, 1544-57, undated dollar of the shield, Liège mint, struck in the name of Charles V. Obverse: quartered arms of the bishop; reverse: crowned imperial eagle displayed. Extremely rare, Very Fine.)

Le 26 juillet 1552, le maître monnayeur Jaspard Vleminx reçut instruction de fabriquer à Liège des dalers et leurs subdivisions en argent sur le pied du thaler d'Empire. Le cri du 5 septembre 1552 mentionne "des dalers d'argent sur le pied de ceux de l'empereur, les électeurs et les villes de l'Empire font de présenté, et que depuis huyt ans en encha ont fait monnoier". (On July 26, 1552, the master coiner Jaspard Vleminx received instructions to manufacture silver dalers and their subdivisions on the standard of the imperial thaler in Liège. The decree of September 5, 1552, mentions, "silver dalers on the standard of those of the emperor, the electors and the cities of the Empire are presented, and which for the last eight years in succession have been minted.")"

The bishopric of Liège was an ecclesiastical state in central Belgium and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. The surrounding territory was ruled by the Spanish Hapsburgs from about 1500 until 1699 and the Austrian Hapsburgs 1714-97.
