The Portuguese landed in Angola in 1491 and immediately made the region a major slaving station, which trade would not end until the 1850's when the British Royal Navy interdicted the trade. The later nineteenth century was devoted to resource extraction and fending off attempts by the other colonizing powers to seize territory. This specimen was lot 35209 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "ANGOLA. 10 Macutas, 1796. Maria I. PCGS AU-55." This type was struck 1796 only. The largest silver coin was a twelve macutas.
Recorded mintage: 24,000.
Specification: 14.55 g, 0.917 fine silver.
