Schulman auction 379, lot 526

This specimen was lot 526 in Schulman auction 379 (Amsterdam, June 2024), where it sold for €120 (about US$154 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"UTRECHT Provincie 1581 - 1795. Leeuwendaalder. 1641, Silver Type IId. Met binnencirkels. Ridder met pluim aan helm achter wapenschild met ongekroonde leeuw naar rechts en titel BELG. TRA. Kz. klimmende leeuw, daarboven jaartal. Geen mmt. Slagbarstje. Zeer fraai. (province of Utrecht, silver lion daalder of 1641, type IId, with inner circles. Obverse: knight with plumed helmet behind the provincial arms; reverse: lion rampant, date above, no mintmark. Planchet crack, very fine.)"

The leeuwendaalder and its half are famous in the numismatic world as being some of the worst struck coins in history. Most of the provinces and several of the cities struck them from the 1570's until the end of the seventeenth century. This unmintmarked subtype was struck 1640-42.
