This specimen was lot 2776 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 420 CHF (about US$501 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916 1/4 Gulden 1874. Wien. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, quarter gulden of 1874, Vienna mint. Very fine-extremely fine.)"
When Bismarck kicked Austria out of Germany after the war of 1866, German and Austrian coins began to diverge. The thaler was abandoned in 1872 for the florin, which in turn was superseded by the corona in 1892. This quarter florin was struck 1872-75 at Vienna and all dates are scarce to rare.
Recorded mintage: 100,000.
Specification: 5.345 g, 0.520 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, this specimen 5.32 g.
