Sincona sale 23, lot 3117

This specimen was lot 3117 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$503 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Salzburg, Erzbistum, Franz Anton von Harrach, 1709-1727 Taler 1723. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, Francis Anthony of Harrach (1709-27), thaler of 1723, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1723-27 and is priced about four times the thalers of Mozart's time.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.98 g.

Catalog reference: Zöttl 2417. Probszt 2006, Dav-1239; KM-320.
