Naples 1813 mezza lira rev DSLR.jpg

After the collapse of the Parthenopean Republic in 1799, king Ferdinand was restored. French troops returned in 1805 and Napoleon's brother Joseph was installed as king (see Dav-165). In 1808, he was called away to be king of Spain and one of Napoleon's generals, Joachim Murat, assumed the throne. A few twelve carlini were issued 1809-10 (see Dav-166) before the coinage was decimalized 1810-13. There was discussion at the Congress of Vienna of allowing Murat to keep his throne but when he threw in his lot with Napoleon during the Hundred Days, he was captured and shot. King Ferdinand was restored in 1815. This half lira is scarce but the most available of the denominations issued in 1813.

Recorded mintage: 165,499.

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 17.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 263, Mont-511 (dot after date).
