This specimen was lot 32333 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $35,250. The catalog description[1] noted, "Danzig. Sigismund II Augustus gold Ducat 1555 MS61 NGC, Obv. Crowned head of King Sigismund II Augustus right. Rev. Crest of the city of Danzig with lion supporters. Bright luster, with only minor marks. Extremely rare in this nice Mint State condition. The only example of this rare Ducat that we have seen." Friedberg lists this type for 1549-58 but all dates are rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, 21-22 mm diameter.
