Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1152

This specimen was lot 1152 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, BEARN, Henri II (1572-1589), AR quart d'écu, 1585. D/ Croix fleurdelisée. R/ Ecu couronné entre II-II. Petit éclat du flan sur la tranche. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Béarn, Henry II, 1572-89, silver quarter écu of 1585. Obverse: floriate cross; reverse: crowned arms of France divides the value. Small rim nick, Very Fine.)"

This type is not listed in Duplessy as this is not a French coin. Henry is entitled "HENRICVS·II·D·G·REX·NAVARRE·BD·" rather than his later title of Henry IV, king of France. The reverse has the motto "GRATIA·DEI·SVM·Q[UE]·SVM·" (Thanks to God, I am who I am.). Henry's assumption of the throne of France would mean the incorporation of Béarn into the kingdom but the mints there would issue distinctive types until the end of the ancien régime.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.71 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 9,33 g.

Catalog reference: B. -; P.A. 3498 var.; D. 1325.
