from Jean Elsen sale 135, lot 828
Lixheim in 1789

This specimen was lot 828 in Jean Elsen sale 135 (Brussels, December 2017), where it sold for €170 (about US$236 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, PHALSBOURG ET LIXHEIM, Principauté, Henriette de Lorraine-Vaudémont (1630-1635), Cu double tournois, 1633. D/ B. à d. R/ Champ semé de lis. Rare. Très Beau. (France, principality of Phalsbourg and Lixheim, Henriette de Lorraine-Vaudémont, 1630-35, copper double tournois of 1633. Obverse: bust right; reverse: field with fleurs-de-lys. Rare, very fine.)"

Henriette de Lorraine-Vaudémont (1605–1660) was the third child of Francis II of Lorraine; she married Louis de Lorraine, Prince of Lexin, son of Louis II, Cardinal of Guise, and had no issue; she later ruled in Pfalzburg/Phalsbourg. Lixheim is today an extremely obscure locale in eastern France, a commune of less than a thousand souls. It is not listed in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown but quite scarce.

Specification: copper, this specimen 2,40 g.

Catalog reference: Flon 811, 12; P.A. 6272.
