This specimen was lot 2618 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $154.70. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[India, Mysore|MYSORE]]: Tipu Sultan, 1782-1799, AE paisa, Kalikut, AM1215, elephant right, small reverse flan defect, VF to EF, ex SARC Auction 29, Lot 1609." This type was also struck AH 1198-1200 at many mints. Tipu Sultan represented the last serious challenge to British supremacy in India by an independent ruler. Hard pressed by war in Europe, the British could not tolerate any such challenge and he was defeated and killed.

The Mauludi Era (AM) was a calendar invented and used only by Tipu Sultan and it lapsed after his death in battle in 1799.
