This specimen was lot 860 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "VIET NAM: Socialist Republic, AV 5000 dong, 2002, Year of the Horse, struck in 9999 fine gold, PCGS graded PF69 Deep Cameo, ex Howard A. Daniel III Collection." In 1975, the communists captured Saigon and reunified Vietnam. It has been said that North Vietnam won the war but lost the peace; the regime's mismanagement of the postwar economy caused the đồng to tumble from 410/dollar (1970) to 6,500/dollar (1990). At present (July 2024), US$1 = 25,407 đồng. Coins did not circulate much in communist Vietnam and now they don't circulate at all. A brass 5000 đồng was struck for circulation in 2003 (KM 73).
Recorded mintage: 28,000.
Specification: 1.24 g, 0.999 fine gold, 0.040 troy oz AGW, 13.9 mm diameter, reeded edge.
Catalog reference: Fr-5, KM-67.
