This specimen was lot 30598 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $4,993.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 100 Francs 1908-A MS64 NGC, Paris mint. An elite and highly desirable grade for this type with alluring pinkish-color color in the fields and light tone around the motifs. Exceptional luster makes this piece ideal as a type representative." This type was struck 1878-1906. In 1907, the edge lettering was changed from DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE to read LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE. The mintage of all gold coinage was suspended in 1914. Of the three types of large gold hundred francs, 346,000 were struck of Napoleon III "bare head," 97,000 were struck of Napoleon III "laureate head," and 274,000 were struck of the "génie." Most survivors are bagmarked AU.

Recorded mintage: 23,038.

Specification: 32.26 g, 0.900 fine gold, .933 troy oz AGW, edge lettered LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE, designed by Albert Desiré Barré after a design by Augustin Dupré.

Catalog reference: KM-858, F.553/2.
