This specimen was lot 75184 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Tanga, 1823. Goa Mint. Joao VI. PCGS EF-40. A nice little minor with almost all details clearly discernable and very little wear across the high points of the design. Of those minted, many saw heavy circulation or were melted in years past, making this quite a SCARCE and seldom offered issue that is bound to draw the attention of specialists." This is an obscure and probably quite rare type struck 1819 and 1823 only. This specimen realized one-fourth the catalog value. In 1869, the local mints were closed in favor of machine-struck coinage from the British mints in India, at which time the rupia was made equal to 16 tanga.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.1 g, silver.
