Jean Elsen sale 121, lot 1260
GB 1672 farthing rev JElsen 121-1260.jpg

This specimen was lot 1260 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €230 (about US$369 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GRANDE-BRETAGNE, Charles II (1660-1685), Cu farthing, 1672, Droit: B. l. et cuirassé à gauche. Revers: Britannia assise à gauche, tenant une lance et un rameau. Très Beau à Superbe. (Great Britain, Charles II (1660-85), copper farthing of 1672. Obverse: laureate and armored bust to left; reverse: seated Britannia to left, bearing a lance and a shield. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1672-79 and is fairly common in low grade. A later attempt to strike farthings in tin was an ignominious flop.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 5.6 g, copper, 25.6 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 436.1, S-3394.
