This specimen, struck for Nicaragua by the Heaton mint in Birmingham, England, superseded the silver five centavos struck in 1880 and 1887. In 1912 the peso was dropped and new coins issued: a half centavo (KM 10, bronze), one centavo (KM 11, bronze), five centavos (KM 12, copper-nickel), ten centavos (KM 13, silver), 25 centavos (KM 14, silver), fifty centavos (KM 15, silver) and one cordoba (KM 16, silver). The five centavos of 1898 (KM 8) had the obverse legend "ESTADO DE NICARAGUA." This type is not scarce except in Uncirculated.
