CNG Lissner sale, lot 213

This specimen was lot 213 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $96.80. The catalog description^[1] noted, "DENMARK. Christian X. 1912-1947. FE 5 Øre. København (Copenhagen) mint. Vilhelm Burchard Poulsen, mintmaster. Knud Gunnar Jensen, engraver. Dated 1918 VBP GJ. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Lightly toned uncirculated. A one year type and very scarce in UNC." Danish currency endured several "reforms" in the nineteenth century. In 1874, the coinage was reformed again to the current system of 100 øre = one krone. Altho Denmark was neutral in World War One, it was subject to the same higher prices for raw materials. This is an emergency issue in iron (or steel) instead of the usual bronze, which alloy was restored in 1919. Similarly, this denomination was struck in zinc during World War Two. Both made bad coinage alloys. The five øre was demonetized in 1989.
