This specimen was lot 10204 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $235. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Teston, 1563-M. Charles IX (1560-74). Toned. NGC EF-45. From the Demarete Collection." The specimen shown is a teston of Charles IX of France (r. 1560-74) struck by the hammer at the Toulouse mint (mintmark "M") in 1563. It is one of several types (Dupl-1063, -1067, -1069, -1071, -1072b, -1073) bearing the portrait of the boy king Charles IX. During the Wars of Religion, which broke out during his reign, the Protestants seized and operated several mints.
Recorded mintage: est. 399,789, a common date.
Specification: 9.59 g, 0.899 fine silver.
