This specimen was lot 72039 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND. 100 Euros, 2008. PCGS PROOF. Certified as one of the first 500 coins struck, this exceptionally mirrored proof issue features a rather robust cameo nature and celebrates the Antarctic explorers Shackleton and Crean, along with their ship, the Endurance." Unlike her neighbor Great Britain, Ireland joined the euro with its initial implementation. This was the first issue of this denomination by Ireland. Ireland has no mint but we don't know where this was made. Another 100 euros, KM 92, was struck in 2016.
Recorded mintage: 2,000 proofs.
Specification: 15.55 g, 0.999 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, 0.50 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Fr-7; KM-57.
