Heritage sale 3064, lot 31001
Great Britain H3064-31001r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31001 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "George III gold Guinea 1792 MS63 NGC, Royal mint. A striking example by all accounts, complete with satiny surfaces that display beautiful amber color at the peripheries and a few scattered marks that align with the grade. The portrait of the King remains bold, as does the reverse shield design, further aiding in its exceptional appearance. As the single-finest example graded, a rather exciting opportunity for the specialist." This type, the commonest of several used during George's long reign, is noted for 1787-99. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. At that time the guinea, which heretofore had varied in value, was fixed at 21 shillings.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 8.35 g, 0.917 fine gold, .246 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: S-3729, Schl. 32. Fr-356; KM-609.
