This specimen was lot 34332 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy: Naples & Sicily. Ferdinand I (1458-1494) Coronato ND (1488-1494)-T MS64 NGC. A rare variety of this type, which MIR calls "Extremamente rare" (extremely rare). Lustrous and commendably preserved, the overall quality of standout character for the issue." Ferdinand I (called Ferrante) was the illegitimate son of the king of Aragon but managed to claim and hold the kingdom of Naples during his lifetime. His death in 1494 attracted the attention of the king of France, who invaded Italy to press his claim to the throne. The resulting war devastated all of Italy and resulted in Spanish control of Naples after 1504. It was the beginning of the end of the Renaissance.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 4 g, silver, 26 mm diameter, this specimen 3.96 g.
