The one sol denomination was originally occupied by the silver sol, struck 1888-1917. It was superseded by a billon coin in 1922, which was replaced by a brass type in 1943 during World War Two. This type, issued 1943-65, is common altho unspotted uncirculated specimens are scarce. It is accompanied by brass five, ten and twenty centavos. Various brass one sol coins, of ever shrinking diameter, were struck until 1981.
Recorded mintage: 1,243,000, a better date.
Specification: 13.8 g, brass, 33 mm diameter, reeded edge.
