Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74663

This specimen was lot 74663 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1607-WA. Saalfeld Mint. Johann Philipp, Friedrich, Johann Wilhelm & Friedrich Wilhelm II. PCGS Genuine--Repaired, VF Details. Presenting an intriguing design with two portraits on each face, this Taler appears original at first glance with warm magenta gray patina and iridescent overtone around the legends. Perfect for astute type collectors of German States coinage who have yet to add an example to their sets." The SCWC lists many different thalers for Saxe-Altenburg. This type is noted from 1605-12 and is common. The last of the brothers died in 1639.
