This specimen was lot 1498 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$960 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Umberto I. 1878-1900 20 Lire 1884 R. Roma Seltener Jahrgang. Sehr schön. (kingdom of Italy, Umberto I, 1878-1900, twenty lire of 1884, Rome mint. Rare date, Very fine.)"
This specimen is one of a series struck 1880-97 at the Rome mint during the reign of Umberto of Italy. It is struck to the same standard as the contemporary French twenty francs. It is the key date of an otherwise common type.
Recorded mintage: 9,775 (a very scarce date).
