Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 38605

This specimen was lot 38605 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mysore. Fanam, AM 1218 (1790). Patan (Seringapatan) Mint. Tipu Sultan. NGC MS-65." Ten fanams made a pagoda. Friedberg lists six mints for this type, including Patan for AH 1197-1201 and AM 1215-1223. The Mauludi Era (AM) was a calendar invented and used only by Tipu Sultan and it lapsed after his death in battle in 1799.
