SA39-2993r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2993 in Stephen Album sale 39 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $102. The catalog description[1] noted, "AWADH: Wajid Ali Shah, 1847-1856, AR rupee, Lucknow, AH1272 year 9, well struck with pleasing tone, choice EF." A succession dispute in Awadh resulted in British intervention and overlordship. Resentment of this and other acts led to the Indian Mutiny of 1857, which was centered at Awadh's capital Lucknow. The Lucknow mint struck this rupee AH 1267-1272. The Banares mint also issued some AH 1263-1268.

Recorded Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 10.7-11.6 g, silver.

Catalog reference: KM-365.3.
