Stack's Bowers June 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71515
SB622-71515r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71515 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mughal Empire. Rupee, AH 1139 Year 9 (1727). Gwalior Mint. Muhammad Shah. NGC MS-63. Offering a supremely attractive Choice surface, the present example is rich with an argent luster and sublime attractivity." The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. This type is listed in the SCWC for 64 mints. The Gwalior mint struck this type during years 1-28 and is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.0-11.6 g, 0.984 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 436.25.
