This specimen was lot 2598 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND: Republic, AE penny, 1952, Hen with Chicks, great luster, a lovely example! NGC graded MS66 RD. Pop 5/0 as of March 2023." After winning independence from Great Britain after World War One, Ireland went thru a civil war before settling on a free state completely separate from Britain. The first coinage of the new country was in 1928; in 1939, the obverse legend was revised from "SAORSTAT EIREANN" to plain "EIRE", which title still obtains. This date is common. The type was struck 1940-43, 1946-52 and 1962-68.
Recorded mintage: 2,400,000.
Specification: 9.45 g, bronze, 30.9 mm diameter, designed by Percy Metcalfe.
Catalog reference: KM-11.
