This specimen was lot 23094 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "ITALY. [[Vatican|Roman Republic]]. Baiocco, 1849-R. Rome Mint. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown Gold Shield. Fully struck with strong luster and loads of mint red coloration remaining over the surfaces." The Roman Republic was a short lived state set up in the Papal States during the European wide insurrections of 1848-49. It was crushed by foreign troops and papal rule restored until 1870. A considerable quantity of copper coins were issued along with a few in billon in denominations ranging from half to forty baiocchi. This one year type is not rare.
