Fiji 1980 cent rev DSLR.jpg

This specimen was issued by the Fiji Islands 1977-82 as part of the F.A.O. series. Fiji, heavily marketed as a tropical paradise where tourists are served cold drinks under swaying palm trees, is not generally considered in need of F.A.O. assistance, but poverty exists there, too. Sterling coinage was issued for the islands starting in 1934. World War Two issues were extensively saved by military personnel stationed there and are the dates most commonly seen today. Decimal conversion occurred in 1967-69, the same time as Britain. Fiji left the British Commonwealth in 1987 but rejoined in 1997. This coin is a product of the Canberra Mint.

Recorded mintage: 314,000 plus 2,500 proofs.

Specification: 1.94 g, bronze, 17.5 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: KM 39.
