This specimen was lot 2721 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH INDIA: Victoria, Empress, 1876-1901, AR rupee, 1885-B, raised B mintmark in top flower only, some marks on obverse fields, type A1/II, VF to EF, RR." This type was issued at Calcutta and Bombay 1877-1901 in a bewildering array of varieties, including proofs, off-metal strikes and restrikes. The type is the largest silver denomination. It is distinguished from the type issued 1862-76 by the obverse legend, "VICTORIA EMPRESS" instead of "VICTORIA QUEEN." This date has many varieties in the bust of the queen.
Recorded mintage: 64,878,000.
Specification: 11.66 g, 0.917 fine silver.
Catalog reference: KM-492, S&W-6.85a.
