Stephen Album sale 43, lot 865

This specimen was lot 865 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $4,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Jahangir, 1605-1628, AR square sawai rupee, Lahore, AH1019 year 5, month of Isfandarmuz; carefully cleaned, bold strike, EF, RR. A similar piece, same month, date, and regnal year, sold in our Auction 28, Lot 2255." The Mughal Empire dominated India during the seventeenth century but broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. This type is listed in the SCWC for AH 1019-1020 and is rare. Lahore is now in Pakistan. We don't know the purpose of the sawai rupee, heavier than the ordinary rupee of 11.4 g.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.0-14.4 g, silver, this specimen 14.22 g.

Catalog reference: KM-160.2.
