For 1837, two edge lettering varieties are noted, regnal year VI and VII (shown here). The early coinage of the Papal States used an antique monetary system. Five quattrini = one baiocco; 5 baiocchi = 1 grosso; 6 grossi = 4 carlini = 3 paoli = 1 testone; 10 testone = 1 doppia; 100 baiocchi = 1 scudi. This specimen was lot 1711 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for € 650 (about US$1,016 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Grégoire XVI (1831-1846), (Bartolomeo Alberto Cappellari), AV 5 scudi, 1837, an 7, Rome. Provient de notre vente 42, 16 décembre 1995, 1448. Fines griffes et léger défaut sur la tranche. Superbe. (Italy, Papal States, Gregory XVI, 1831-46, gold five scudi, year VII, Rome mint. Fine scratches and a minor edge fault; extremely fine. This type was struck in Rome 1835-46. The bust is of Gregory XVI. For 1837, two edge lettering varieties are noted, regnal year VI and VII (shown here).
