Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 57381
SB124-57381 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 57381 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal (States of the Church). 20 Baiocchi, 1839-R Year IX. Rome Mint. Gregory XVI. PCGS AU-55." The early coinage of the Papal States used an antique monetary system. After 1830, five quattrini = one baiocco; 100 baiocchi = one scudo. In 1866, the currency was reformed to use centesimi and lire in order to match that of the surrounding kingdom of Italy. In 1870, the Papal States were occupied and annexed by the kingdom of Italy and coinage ceased until 1929. This type was struck 1835-46 at Bologna and Rome and has a modest catalog value.

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarce.

Specification: 5.37 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Ber-3288, KM-1322.
