This specimen was lot 478 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €380 (about US$494 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Charles Quint (1506-1555), AR 4 patards (vlieger), 1543, Anvers. D/ Aigle impériale couronnée. R/ Ecu aux seize quartiers couronné, sur une croix de Bourgogne. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles V, 1506-55, silver four patards or vlieger of 1543, Antwerp mint. Obverse: crowned imperial eagle; reverse: crowned arms of sixteen quarters over a Burgundian cross. Very Fine.)"
Brabant, originally part of the Burgundian inheritance, fell to the Hapsburgs on the death of the last duke of Burgundy in 1477. On the emperor Charles's abdication in 1555, the Hapsburg inheritance was divided between the Austrian and Spanish branches, and the Netherlands passed to Philip II, a dour and unbending Catholic. This four patards is known from Brabant for 1537-51. A similar coin struck in Flanders, worth four stuivers, was called a vlieger.
