Künker sale 263, lot 1333

This specimen was lot 1333 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,842 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-SAALFELD, HERZOGTUM, AB 1735 SACHSEN-COBURG-SAALFELD Ernst I. 1806-1826. Kronentaler 1825. Mit Randschrift: EIN KRONTHALER. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, winz. Randfehler, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Saalfeld, Ernest I, 1806-26, crown thaler of 1825, with edge lettering. Of the greatest rarity, toned, tiny edge cracks, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This rare type is one of three thalers listed for this duchy in the nineteenth century. In 1826, the duke exchanged Saalfeld for Gotha and assumed the title of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29.59 g, 0.868 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-833; AKS 127; Kahnt 502; Thun 373, KM 164.
