Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 20427
SB121-20427r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20427 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. Krone, 1879. Kongsberg Mint. Oscar II. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. One of the SCARCER, earlier dates in this series, the present specimen stands as the only example of the date seen by PCGS and offers a charming champagne tone darkens magnificently as one approaches the peripheries. Enchanting and wholly transfixing." In 1907, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden and became an independent kingdom under a Danish prince. Even before passing under Swedish rule in 1814, Norway had enjoyed a separate coinage from Denmark. The specimen shown here is from of a type struck 1877-1900 and was accompanied by a silver fifty ore and two kroner of similar design. Many dates, including this one, are very scarce.

Recorded mintage: 140,000.

Specification: 7.50 g, 0.800 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-357.
