Jean Elsen sale 135, lot 915

This specimen was lot 915 in Jean Elsen sale 135 (Brussels, December 2017), where it sold for €160 (about US$222 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NAMUR, Comté, Philippe II (1555-1598), Cu double denier (8 mites), 1579. Différent: lis au droit et au revers. D/ Croix de Bourgogne cantonnée de quatre annelets (en une ligne horizontale). PHILIP• en début de légende. R/ Ecu namurois couronné. Rare Avec étincelles au briquet. Très Beau. (Spanish Netherlands, county of Namur, Philip II, 1555-98, copper double denier (eight mites) of 1579, privy mark: lily on the reverse. Obverse: Burgundian cross divides four annulets; reverse: crowned arms of Namur. Rare, very fine.)"

The weight of this specimen matches this liard of Artois, so we surmise that they were equal in value.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen 4,95 g.

Catalog reference: G.H. 266-13a; Chalon, Namur, 238.
