Sincona sale 47, lot 3012

This specimen was lot 3012 in Sincona sale 47 (Zurich, May 2018), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$480 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND, Waadt/Vaud, Kanton, 5 Batzen 1805. Sehr seltener Jahrgang. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Leicht gereinigt. (canton of Vaud, five batzen of 1805, Very rare year, Very fine-extremely fine, Slightly cleaned.)"

After being temporarily unified under Napoleon's Helvetic Republic, the cantons went their separate ways after the Congress of Vienna and issued a torrent of low value coins. Not until 1850 would a unified confederation mint her own coins and terminate the local issues. This type was struck 1805-06 and was worth one eighth of a thaler.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 4.49 g.

Catalog reference: D.T. 229a, HMZ 2-1002b, KM 11.
