Sincona sale 85, lot 2968

This specimen was lot 2968 in Sincona sale 87 (Zurich, October 2023), where it sold for 475 CHF (about US$640 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916. Dukat 1874, Wien. NGC MS62. (empire of Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, ducat of 1874, Vienna mint. Uncirculated.)"

Gold ducats were struck throughout Franz Josef's long reign and come in many types. This design was struck 1872-1915 without mintmark and is common. The 1915 has been restruck and is readily available for its bullion value.

Recorded mintage: 353,000.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, 19.8 mm diameter, this specimen 3.47 g.
