Ponterio sale 177, lot 34753
Germany 1935F 5 mark rev P177-34753.jpg

This specimen was lot 34753 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $603. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. 5 Reichsmark, 1935-F. Stuttgart Mint. NGC PROOF-66 ULTRA CAMEO. Hindenburg." This type of 1935-36 makes no reference to the newly installed Nazi regime; the issue of 1936-39 (KM 94) added a swastika to the reverse. Though the size of a half dollar, its higher fineness meant that it contained the same amount of silver as the larger five mark of the Weimar Republic such as the Goethe commemorative (Dav-974). This type was also minted at Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Berlin ("A"), Karlsruhe ("G") and Hamburg ("J").

Recorded mintage: 4,372,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 13.88 g, 0.900 fine silver, .401 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-86.
