Netherlands East Indies 1904 1/10 gulden

from the Stack's Bowers 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71384

This specimen was lot 71384 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $80. The catalog description^[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. 1/10 Gulden, 1904. Utrecht Mint. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. A brilliant and flashy strike, with that freshly minted look." This type was struck 1903-09 and is common. The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1900's, the Dutch had conquered the profitable parts and the empire was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. However, their founding of schools for the natives led to the rise of an educated elite eager for independence.

Recorded mintage: 5,000,000 + proofs, a common date.
