This specimen was lot 72353 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 8 Reales, 1849-LIMA MB. Lima Mint. NGC VF-20. An elusive date in the series, with signs of a clear underlying date, this charming and original 8 Reales delivers steely gray surfaces and wonderful details throughout. A problem free specimen that should fill the hole in the collection of any specialist." This type was struck 1841-52. the branch mints Cuzco and Arequipa were winding down their operations after being very busy in the 1820's and 30's. The last Cuzco 8 reales was issued in 1840 (KM 142.9) and the last Arequipa 8 reales was in 1841 (KM 142.11, an extreme rarity). The last eight reales struck in Peru was issued in 1857. The 1849 is a very scarce date.
