Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 52248

This specimen was lot 52248 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $2,100. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. "Family" Taler, 1691-IT. Frederick I. PCGS AU-58. A stunning family Taler, this wonderful piece offers strong details and good allure, with a soft gunmetal gray throughout. Circulation is limited to the highest elements of the design, and much allure is yet present. A most wholesome piece for any specialist in Talers, or beautifully engraved coins more generally." This type was also struck 1688 and 1690 but is rather expensive. Saxe-Altenburg, one of the many splinters of ducal Saxony, was formed in 1573 and lapsed several times before its final extinction after World War One. One of its permutations, Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, survived 1680-1826.
