This specimen was lot 1009 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $176.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "SUMATRA: Bencoolen Presidency, 1760-1785, AE 2 kepings, 1797. East India Company issue, narrow flan variety, VF to EF." The British East India Company held trading stations on the island of Sumatra for decades prior to the Napoleonic Wars. This copper coins, accompanied by one and three kepings and likely made in Birmingham, were issued for use there. As part of the Vienna Conference in 1815, the British surrendered all their holdings in Indonesia to the Dutch in exchange for a free hand in Malaya and Singapore.
