Mughal Empire AH 1041/5 rupee KM-224.12

This specimen was lot 1867 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $235. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Shah Jahan I, 1628-1658, AR rupee, Kashmir, AH1041 year 5, month of Ardibihisht, bold VF to EF, R, ex Ajit Singh Collection." The Mughal Empire stretched over most of India in the early seventeenth century and numerous mints struck silver rupees for the emperor. The Mughal Empire broke up in the eighteenth century under external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war. This collapse allowed European colonizers entry into the subcontinent and eventual British control. The SCWC lists 22 mints for this type, which was struck at Kashmir AH 1040-1042. By comparison, the Tatta mint is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a scarce mint.
