This specimen was lot 41319 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $15,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "An Elusive Danzig Taler. POLAND. Danzig. Taler, 1685-DL. John III Sobieski (1674-96). NGC EF-40. A wholly impressive survivor of this RARE issue, showcasing soft gray tone over both sides and smooth surfaces that are free of nearly all marks and display only gentle wear over the highest portions of the design. Extremely desirable as one of only two examples of the type that are presently certified by NGC and PCGS combined. Ruling for 22 years, Sobieski's reign is largely remembered for his commanding success in the 1683 Battle of Vienna where he triumphed over the Turks, the result contributing mightily to a period of stabilization for the Commonwealth of Poland after nearly half a century of military conflict. From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II." The city of Danzig issued this rare thaler in 1685; it is the last thaler recorded from Poland in the seventeenth century.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: Kop-7688; HCz-2498; Gum-2041; Dav-4361.
