Liberia was founded in the 1840's by freed slaves from America who promptly set up a caste society in Africa with the local natives as lesser citizens. This two tier society has broken down somewhat but outbursts of political violence continue. Much of the Liberian circulation coinage was produced by the Franklin Mint but this issue was made in Denver and San Francisco 1960-61, 1968-78, 1983-84. In the last twenty years, Liberia has fallen into the clutches of the private minters, who have issued such Liberian themed commemoratives as Star Trek (KM 128), Babe Ruth (KM 131) and Princess Diana (KM 464).
Recorded mintage: 2,500,000.
Specification: 2.6 g, bronze, 18 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 13.
