Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70543

This specimen was lot 70543 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Besancon. Teston (8 Gros), 1624. Charles V. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. Struck in the name of Charles V. A somewhat crudely made coin, with double striking apparent on both sides, and a crack in the rim at 2 on the obverse. Generally the design detail is clear, with an old cleaning that has now toned a medium gray." Altho today Besançon is part of France, being the chief city of the Franche-Comte, in 1624 it was part of the Holy Roman Empire. It was incorporated into France in 1678. French coins struck there bear the mintmark "CC". This type was struck 1623-24 and passed for a quarter thaler.
